About the team
The 4 original founders of our Chilliwack Masters Swim Club are Andrew Carmichael, Kayt Hine, Larry Hine and Lolita Rochelle-Lazenby. Our club started as an idea - after swimming with Justin Daly (Spartan Swim Club - offering a Master Swim class) was no longer available to us in January 2015. Lolita was a major contributor in the early stages, but she passed away in June 2015. Partially in tribute to Lolita, and her enthusiastic contributions, our swim club was set up by September 2015.
Our small club of 4 members has grown since the 2015/16 season; we now have over 40 active Master swimmers (and a waiting list with people who want to join our team). Currently Sylvia Robertson, Mark Langer, Kayt Hine, and Kim Bientjes do a great job of running our club and our head coach is Quinton Richert.
We focus on three ideas:

FUN
Get great exercise through swimming

FITNESS
Compete (if you want to) and represent our community of Chilliwack

FRIENDS
Grow your social circle by swimming with like-minded people

Secretary/Registrar - Kim Bientjes

I have always loved the water – even though I was not an age group swimmer. I started with Masters after I finished high school, and have swum with several Masters’ clubs in the lower mainland (North Vancouver, West Vancouver, Abbotsford and Chilliwack). Swimming is exercise I combine with hiking and biking – and with the Chilliwack Masters Club I have started to swim competitively as well (locally, provincially and nationally). So I guess you can call me a late starter, but it has been so much fun, meeting like minded people and staying in shape in the process!

I can recommend it to anyone – the Chilliwack Master Swim Club logo of Fun, Friendship and Fitness is exactly what we stand for!

Vice President - Mark Langer

I developed a love of swimming as a competitive swimmer during my childhood in Québec. After graduating from university, I worked various jobs taking me from Ontario to Saskatchewan, and eventually in 1997, to British Columbia, my home. My love of swimming never waned, and a chance encounter with a Chilliwack Masters swimmer in 2018 convinced me to join the club.

I have never looked back. I love the camaraderie found within this swim team, and enjoy competing at the local, provincial, and national levels with other swimmers who share my passion.

President - Kayt Hine

Growing up near Harrison Lake; swimming has always been a big part of my life. Living so near the water, my parents wanted my siblings and I to know how to swim. All three of us were signed up for regular swim lessons and were, eventually, all enrolled in the Spartan swim club.

I swam with the Spartans competitively at an LMR level for about five years. During this time I also took my National Lifesaving and Water Safety Instructor courses, and started working in aquatics as a Lifeguard and Swim Instructor. It was about a year after graduating high school and leaving the Spartans that I decided I wanted to get back into swimming. At this time the only Masters team in Chilliwack was run by Justin Daily under the Spartans. After a year off, it felt great to be back in a team atmosphere!

After Justin could no longer run the program, Chilliwack Masters officially became a Club and I have continued to swim, compete, and volunteer as part of the executive team in the roles of Graphic/Web Designer, and Assistant Meet Manager.

Director at Large - Sylvia Robertson

I started swimming with the Chilliwack Masters Swim Club 2 years ago, and am now in my 3rd year with them. I have always loved the water and a lot of water sports/activities, although I have never swum with a club or competitively growing up. I did swim previously with a Masters group for a couple of years, quite a long time ago, at the old Cheam pool. Lifeguarding and teaching swimming at all age levels helped pay my way through university. Aside from swimming, I also enjoy stand-up paddleboarding, hiking, mountain biking (easy trails only!) and wake-surfing.

The CMSC is a fun group of swimmers offering friendship and lots of encouragement to continue improving swim technique, all while helping you to stay fit. While I have not competed in any events, I am being “gently pushed” to give it a try! However, I have done some stroke and turn judging at a few competitions, and would definitely recommend doing that to any swimmers who want to get a feel for what it’s like to be at a Master’s competition.

In short, the CMSC is a wonderful team with which to experience fun, friendship and fitness! Come join us!
